As the former principal of Claudia Taylor Johnson High School, I have had the pleasure of working with Melinda Cox for several years. Melinda was, and still is, a vital member of the PTSA that continues to do marvelous work for the students and teachers at Johnson High School.

From the start, Melinda had the best interest in the students at CTJ. Her main focus was, and still is, the safety and well-being of all students, especially when it comes to driving. She wanted to get the message out about the dangers of distracted driving, especially texting. As a result, Melinda initiated the Smart Driving Club with the motto, “Eyes on the Road,” to remind students the dangers of distracted driving. She continues to work with SAPD, Bexar County, emergency response and many other community groups to set up programs for students at CTJ. Each legislative year, Melinda also arranges for the members of the Smart Driving Club to meet with state legislatures to help promote the need for more safety measures.

One of the best teaching methods for students to remember a message is to create a scenario that impacts them personally. Through the Smart Driving Club, Melinda worked with the campus and our PTSA to start the Shattered Dreams Program at CTJ. Shattered Dreams is a program that involves all local emergency entities working together in a real life-like fatal car crash followed by a funeral service the next day. This program sends a powerful message relating to distracted and impaired driving.

Having witnessed her passion for students at CTJ, I personally believe Melinda Cox has the mindset, leadership ability, and the heart to be a great asset to the NEISD School Board. From my experience watching her develop the Smart Driving Club, Melinda has the innate ability to work with others in getting things done.”
