Who is Melinda?
With over two decades of residency in the NEISD community, I bring a deep-rooted commitment to our district. My journey began when I married Robert in 2001, and together we've raised three children – Madeline, Aidan, and Egan. Witnessing their educational growth within NEISD schools – Roan Forest ES, Cibolo Green ES, Tejeda MS, Hill MS, and Johnson HS – has further fueled my dedication to our district's success. As the mom of a current teacher, I see her struggles and want to do my part to improve the educational environment for all stakeholders.
Professionally, I hold a Bachelor's degree in Journalism from Texas A&M University and a Master's in Communication from the University of Houston. I worked at Valero until our second child was born and have been a full-time mom and volunteer ever since.
In 2011, a personal loss sparked a deep concern for road safety, especially for young drivers like my daughter. Motivated by this, I founded the JHS PTSA Smart Driving Club in 2012 to combat distracted driving and amplify student voices within NEISD. Since then, I've been actively involved in initiatives to instill safer driving habits and empower our students to shape their futures.
Engaging with student voices remains the highlight of my day. I value their commitment and vision, recognizing them as vital stakeholders in our district's journey toward excellence.
As a candidate for the school board trustee, I am deeply committed to advocating for the best interests of our students, families, and educators. Together, let's continue to foster a supportive and thriving educational environment within NEISD.
Why am I seeking election?
I am excited to announce my candidacy for the SMD 5 school board position, fueled by a clear vision and purpose. I am dedicated to making meaningful contributions to the board's discussions and decisions. With over a decade of volunteer experience on our campuses, I am grateful for the opportunity to serve in this capacity.
Recognizing the privilege of being part of the school community, akin to being a guest, influences my approach as a potential board member. If elected, I pledge to uphold this role with the utmost respect for the position, the district, and the individuals – both staff and students – I would be entrusted to serve. My primary objective is to provide valuable insights, promote collaboration, and actively contribute to the ongoing enhancement of education within NEISD.
I strongly value the vital role our teachers play in shaping futures. Each of us carries the memory of those exceptional teachers who empowered us to embrace learning and our authentic selves. Collaborating with NEISD, I am eager to champion initiatives that foster a nurturing workplace atmosphere for educators and staff. As a parent to a dedicated teacher, I understand the significance of providing support, ensuring safety, facilitating continuous professional growth, and fostering robust parent engagement. These pillars are indispensable to cultivating an environment where every classroom thrives and every student flourishes.
I deeply believe in the transformative impact of supporting our youth. Watching a young person develop self-confidence and then pay it forward to others is incredibly fulfilling. For nearly 14 years, I've devoted myself to students, guided by the principle that with privilege comes responsibility. Inspired by my children's positive experiences in the NEISD education system, made possible by dedicated staff, campuses, volunteers, and community members, I am committed to ensuring this enriching experience for all NEISD students.
In 2012, I founded the Smart Driving Club to champion road safety for new and young drivers. This initiative was not only about creating safer roads but also empowering young drivers to assert their right to safety. I strongly believe that at its core, school board members share a parallel responsibility – collaborating with our district to ensure students have a voice and the means to express it effectively.
In summary, my candidacy is motivated by a profound sense of duty, respect for our community, and a sincere commitment to enhancing the well-being and education of every NEISD student.
